Can either of Ronaldo and Messi still win the ballon d'Or

Discussion in 'Italian League' started by Prince Adebayo, Dec 5, 2018.

  1. The Ballon d'Or 2018 mark precisely 10 years since Cristiano won his first ballon d'Or few months after switching to Real Madrid. The Portuguese superstar together with his Argentine rival Lionel Messi had each won the title ever since.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric broke their duopoly 10 years later after he beat them to the 2018 ballon d'Or award but their are indications that both Messi and Ronaldo will likely be among the candidates again next year.

Juventus boss Max Allegri believes Cristiano Ronaldo can win the Ballon d'Or as a Bianconeri player. Ronaldo could only finish second behind his former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric in the running for the Ballon d'Or on Monday.

Allegri stated, “It's disappointing, as he would've certainly deserved to win it for what he did with Real Madrid. He couldn't have gone any further than he did at the World Cup with Portugal. His motivation now is to win it next year with Juventus."

Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are tied on 5 ballon d'Or award each and either of them will be eyeing the sixth tittle. Despite failing to win it in 2018, these two players should not be ruled out.

While their starts to the 2018/19 season shouldn't count in the 2019 award, what is clear is that their goalscoring pace isn't really slowing down and that they should post sizable goals tallies next year. So far this season Ronaldo has 11 goals in 18 matches, while Messi has 15 in 15.

But it's worth nothing that other players have gotten their hope raised after they saw Modric wining the award, the likes of Antoine Griezmann who felt he should have won the award after winning both the Europa League tittle and the Champions last season would give the title a good shot.

Paris Saint-Germain duo of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, Chelsea star, Eden Hazard, Manchester City veteran striker Sergio Aguero together with lots of other players will give the Champions League tittle a shot believing that the 2019 UEFA tournament will be vital in determining the next winner.
