Is Nigeria ready for the World Cup?

The match against Poland ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria, base on the result, we seem to forget all our flaws in the match but it was a moral booster for our psyche because we won a highly ranked Poland team at their backyard, we were under pressure for the greater part of the game and we didn't concede which proves that we could probably hold the fort while we are under pressure.

Am I satisfied with our match against Serbia and Poland? Let me start by saying I'm not satisfied with the friendlies not to talk of being satisfied with match. I believe the Super Eagles wasted those friendlies. Why did I say that?

By May 18, FIFA stipulates that no professional player is allowed to play a football match because they want all the players to rest for about a week or two. So all the players that will feature in the World Cup will be resting except the players that will play in the UEFA Champions League final.

So immediate the league ends, no country will be able to play friendly between now and when the list for the World Cup will be submitted. The coach already had his last opportunity of seeing the players he wants to see. What FIFA expects all the National team coach to submit is the provisional list of 30 players, and by the first week in June, they will have to select their First 23 while the other players will remain as alternate players.

Should any player get injured while preparing for the World Cup, (in the other friendly matches. Nigeria still have friendly matches against DR Congo, England and Czech Republic) the coach will have to select from the list of alternate players as he will not be able to pick a player from outside the list of 30 players earlier submitted.

Where I have problems with the friendlies and Gernot Rohr is that Rohr invited 28 players to Camp when he had the opportunity to submit a list of 30 players, personally I was thinking he would invite 35 players. On the pitch we have 10 outfit positions. If he had invited 10 players for each position, we'll have 30 players and then he can invite 5 goalkeepers, because he expected to submit a list of 4 goal keepers one of which will be an alternate goal keepers.

He should have thrown the camp open for competition, some players as it were now are very comfortable because they believe they are already on the world Cup team, so they could afford to play what they like during the friendlies as seen in what happened in the last two friendlies. The team failed to play together, it was a foul cry from what we played against Argentina.

It's save to say the coach did a lot of experimenting especially against Serbia and we that were not that poor. Against Serbia Rohr played Ahmed Musa as the striker instead of Ighalo, Kelechi lhenacho was unavailable as a result of injury, Mikel was unavailable for the match, Etebo Oghenekaro was recovering from injury which made him use Joel Obi, Ogehi Onazi and Wilfred Ndidi in the midfield. Unfortunately, these three players are defensive midfielders which was responsible for the disjoint between the defense and the attack.

Nigeria lost to Serbia and I'm very happy with that, why did I say that? The Super Eagles won her first first friendly match after the world Cup draws were made against Poland and before that the Eagles came from 2-0 goals down to defeat Argentina 4-2 and Nigeria were thinking the Eagles can go as far as the Semi final of the World Cup.

Against Serbia the defence was shaky, the midfield couldn't connect with the attack and Nigeria suffered a 2-0 defeat and this gives enough reason why technical department need to work on balancing the team.

The Serbia match is much of an eye opener and this is not the time for experimenting, the coach should know who should be on the team and also be working with the players so we can boast of a solid team by the time the world Cup begin.

    How do we handle injury?
    Is there a shock absorber?
    How equipped is the bench?
Who is taking the set pieces for the Super Eagles?

The team does not have anyone to handle set pieces, which is very bad, lots of countries score goals from set pieces, infact the Polish threatened the Super Eagles from set pieces and we should also assign a player for set pieces duties to boost our chances of getting goals from set pieces.

Giving the No 1 Jersey to 19 year old Francis Uzoho might not be the right step in the right direction, it might work against the team, the other goal keepers might give up trying to impress the coach by training harder and Francis Uzoho might begin to display some complacency too

Conclusively, some fan are clamouring for Vincent Enyeama without doubt Vincent is an experienced goalkeeper and he might add alot to the Eagles. As a matter of fact, I'm a strong advocate for a player like Obafemi Martin in the squad. Martins plays in the same league with Ighalo and going by their stats, Martins has a better statistics than Ighalo.

Invite Obafemi Martins same with Vincent Enyeama, you never can tell, they could end up being another Roder Miller for the Eagles afterall, Roger Miller was playing at Reunion island compare to the Chinese Super League Martins is playing at. Mikel Obi who is our most important player plays in China. If you ask me who should be our third choice goal keeper between Daniel Akpeyi and Vincent Enyeama, without thinking twice, I'll go for Vincent.

And those who were asking where these players were when we were playing the qualifies, I'll ask you where was Paolo Rossi when they were playing the 1982 World Cup qualifiers, he was under suspension for match fixing which he still denies till today but at the World Cup he was named the Six Million Dollar Man for scoring 6 goals that helped Italy win the World Cup. In 1994 where was Peter Rufai, Chidi Nwanu during the World Cup qualifiers? We all know their exploit in the World Cup.

I believe the Super Eagles and the technical team have a long way to go if they are to go far in this year World Cup. Have a say, drop your comments below.

Obafemi Martins would have been a great inclusion in the team but unfortunately, he's out injured so that bring to end the debate of his inclusion in the squad.
