Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has explained why he thinks the club had no choice but to part ways with Mourinho

The former goalkeeper opined that Mourinho’s negativity above all else is what led to his downfall at Manchester United. In his first season, Mourinho won the EFL Cup and the Europa League at United but became increasingly bitter towards the end of his time with the club.

Schmeichel speaking on beIN Sports discussed what went wrong for Mourinho and why United had no choice but to let him go.
“I think the biggest problem that we had with him was the communication to the world,” Schmeichel told beIN Sports.

“He represented Man United and it wasn’t good. It was very negative and it was kind of really sort of sad in a way. There are millions of Man United fans everywhere in the world. A lot of them live by the club. They need to be inspired by the manager.”

Schmeichel added that Mourinho’s issues were not a recent trend before his sacking on December 18 and rather a problem which can be traced back to before the start of the campaign.

Mourinho no longer had the patience or people skills to adapt. Instead of working with Eric Bailly, he'd sulk and wonder why he hadn't got a ready-made John Terry in the dressing-room.

He praised Liverpool's Andy Robertson without having the self-awareness to realise that while he frequently slaughtered Shaw, Klopp never publicly buried Robertson when he struggled in his first six months at Anfield.

The moment that sealed the Portuguese fate was when he beckoned Mata to be his final substitute and left Paul Pogba on the bench, before then, he has frequently lashed out at his player, Pogba, Martial to mention a few.

Unlike Ferguson who embraced the modern player and felt it kept him young, Mourinho never even tried. He criticised or fell out not only with Pogba but Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Phil Jones, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Antonio Valencia - and those are just the ones we know about.

“This year for some reason it all began in pre-season. He was a little bit pushed or under pressure for no apparent reason even before the whole thing started,” Schmeichel added.

“The way he was communicating in press briefings or interviews, you could see that he was not comfortable with his life.

“I’m talking right from the beginning when they reported back for pre-season. It could have been about transfers, I don’t know. But there was something wrong and he had to leave the job because it wasn’t working out for him.”
