Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been named Africa’s best football goalkeeper in the just concluded CAF Awards 2018 that took place on Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal. Onyango who plies his trade in South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, was the only player based in Africa on the selected Africa’s best XI team 2018. Others on the team include Mohamed Salah (African Player of the year 2018), Aurier, Benatia, Bailly, Koulibaly, Keita, Partey, Mahad Mahrez, Aubameyang and Sadio Mane The Mamelodi Sundowns custodian who is Africa's best goalkeeper and arguably Uganda's greatest shot-stopper took to social media to share the great news in a short post saying: ''IF U BELIEVE IT, U CAN DO IT''. The post was accompanied by a picture of him standing next to other award winners including Mo Salah (who won African Best Football player) with each holding his award. The player has been been voted the best goalkeeper achieving something no Ugandan has achieved before at Glo-Caf African Player of the year, infact, Onyango is the first Ugandan athlete to be recognised internationally. Onyango who is credited for guiding Cranes to the second back-to-back AFCON finals as well as maintaining a superb performance at Mamelodi and in the same awards, Uganda Cranes lost to Mauritania on the CAF national team of the year. The Awards Gala, to honour footballers and officials who distinguished themselves during the year 2018 was held on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 in Dakar, Senegal. Onyango was shortlisted with 33 other illustrious players, most plying their trade in Europe. The shortlisted nominees were decided by votes from the members of the CAF Technical and Development Committee.
